JULIA POMEROY
Artist - Beyond Photography Collective
Julia Pomeroy is a figurative, multi-media artist who experiments with the relationship between emotion and colour, producing innovative and creative pieces which all have individual, specific stories from her everyday life. She draws inspiration from her close friends and their new experiences as they enter adolescence, combatting expectations from societies while pursuing dynamic aspirations and continuously showing off their strengths and talents. Julia primarily produces expressive and surreal figurative paintings and portraits, representing certain emotions through unconventional colour choices, movement and time, but recently has moved into other mediums such as sculpture and photography to convey her intentions.
Julia on Beyond Photography: Beyond Photography has been the perfect opportunity for me to challenge the conventional means of photography by refining my imagery through sculpture, exhibiting and reaching out to a broader audience. Reinventing photography and sculpture as one art form. I have questioned whether photography can only be the documentation of one moment in time by bringing back those captured worlds from the past to our present 3D reality as a 360-transparent photo. My interactive, distorting mirror allowed viewers to play around with broken-selfie taking, a modern form of photographing. Commenting on societies obsession of physical image and beauty standards. Both pieces displaying the competition between still and moving imagery, while allowing escapism and self-observation. Works, which has influenced me are the dynamic and innovative use of materials and bending of form in Urs Fischer’s work, and Tobia Buche’s nostalgic, personal and an exciting culmination of everyday pop culture documents.
